Is there a good reason that the discussion seems to be limited to only the Hi-Capa series? Seeing as this is airsoft, the power limits are not an issue.

I have not purchased a GBB Pistol and am thinking of doing so. If I do, I am interested in this (AASP) class of competition. However, I do not like to look of the Hi-Capa (yes, it could grow on me; but don't like it). I am more inclined toward the M1911A1 or the M9 styles; however, some, such as the Glock and P226 styles also look attractive.

As stated, I just don't like the blockey look of the Hi-Capas'. Would I be putting myself at an impossible disadvantage if I were to go with something else?

Hasaf -

If you plan to upgrade a Hicapa, you can make it look like the 1911 series. All you need to do is change out the grips and slide.

Example:

Although, there are many accounts of people using single stack 1911's and Glocks. The disadvantage of 1911's is their low Gas capacity and BB count. Hicapa has almost double the gas capacity and has 28 - 51 Round Magazine capacity while the 1911 is limited to roughly 24 BB's I believe. To be honest, any GBB will work as most GBBs out of the box will be able to cycle quickly enough before you actually acquire your next target. The only problem with not cycling fast enough is that rounds may not be chambered as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Hi-Cappas are not the only game in town (nor are they the best).

They get the attention because there are a lot of parts, mags, and information out there for them.

As mentioned, any GBB will work. Getting parts may or may not be an issue for other guns. I have three guns, only one is a TM Hi Cappa. I can shoot as quickly and accurately with any of them. The TM shoot better at longer distances, though.

Go with what feels most comfortable in your hand.

As far as single stack 1911's go, one thing I would note is that it is much harder to reload this gun under pressure as the magazine well is significantly smaller than all the other double stack options, so you have a lot less room for error. That being said, this can be overcome to a certain degree with patient practice. I for one love the feel of a single stack 1911 more than any other gun I've had the pleasure of firing.\\
