Do I need my own gun and holster?
Most competitors will have their own guns and holsters, but you are allowed to use borrowed equipment. Some leagues have a limited number of guns and holsters available for new competitors to use at practice sessions and matches. If you plan to use borrowed equipment, you should contact the league chairperson or match director in advance of the practice session or match to check on the availability of loaner equipment.

How much does the equipment cost to become an AAPS competitor?
The minimum equipment needed for airsoft practical shooting competitions consists of: a) safety glasses, b) gas blow-back airsoft pistol, c) holster, d) belt, e) two magazine pouches, f) one spare magazine, g) gas, h) BBs, and i) gun case or bag. As with most sports, the cost of the equipment can vary over a wide range. It is possible to put together a complete shooting kit for as little as $300 while some competitors will spend over $1,500 just for a gun. Most competitors will spend between $500 and $800 for their shooting kit.

What equipment is commonly used in competitions?
The most commonly used competition guns are from Tokyo Marui (Hi-Capa 5.1, Glock 17), Western Arms (Infinity Series), and KSC/KWA (Glock 17 and 34). Commonly used competition holsters include the Ghost holster and CR Speed holster.

Is there a dress code for AAPS events?
Competitors must wear shoes, pants, and shirts that are appropriate for light exercise that allow for a wide range of movement and sure footing. Since stages may involve shooting from kneeling or prone positions or crawling under barriers, most competitors prefer to wear long pants rather than shorts. Competitors are prohibited from wearing camouflage and other military/tactical style clothing, including “combat” boots, and must not wear clothing that displays offensive words, phrases, or slogans.

Why do airsoft guns come with an orange marking on the barrel?
This is not really an AAPS issue, but it is important that AAPS members understand the law regarding markings on airsoft guns. A minimum of a 6 mm blaze orange tip must be present on the barrel end of any airsoft gun that is imported or sold in the USA. Federal law requires this marking to be present for any sale or transport of an airsoft gun. Federal law does not prevent an owner from removing this marking for personal use. However, if the airsoft gun is transported off the owner’s property for any reason, the marking must be present. In addition, some state laws prevent the removal of this marking under any circumstances. To be on the safe side, do not remove the barrel marking from your airsoft gun(s). And remember, federal law requires that you have the blaze orange barrel marking in place whenever you transport your airsoft guns (e.g. traveling to an AAPS event). The penalties for transporting and/or selling airsoft guns without the barrel marking are quite severe. Check your local laws for any additional restrictions concerning airsoft guns. For example, in some areas of the country, it is illegal to sell, purchase, or deliver airsoft guns (e.g. New York City).
